Setup and Alignment

Using a Smart Board in your classroom involves three items.
  • Computer
  • Projector
  • Smart Board

Your Smart Board is mounted in your room in one of two varieties. It is either on a rolling stand or placed on a rail that extends along the front of your classroom so that it can slide in and out of the way of your whiteboard. The method of mounting is decided by the layout of your room. There is no real difference between the either mounting method other than how it displays the Smart Board.

Activating and Connecting Your Smart Board

Before getting started you should have the Smart Board Notebook software and product drivers installed on your computer. There are three different ways to tell if Notebook is installed. If the software is not installed or you have trouble accessing it please contact the school's Tech Coordinator.

1. Check your desktop for the blue Notebook Icon

2. Click Start > All Programs > Smart Technologies >Smart Notebook > Smart Notebook 10

3. In the lower right hand corner of your Windows desktop is another blue Notebook icon. If there is no Smart Board connected a small red and white X will appear in the corner of the icon. You can still right click on the icon and open the menu despite the lack of connection.

Once you locate the software you are now ready to get started.
There are three parts to a successful Smart Board operation.
  • Computer
  • Projector
  • Smart Board

You need to connect the computer to the projector using the supplied VGA cable on your classroom A/V cart. The computer also needs to be connected to the Smart Board using the USB cable which is supplied with your Smart Board. The USB cable provides power to the board as well connects the desktop functions you interact with.

1. Use any available USB port on your computer.

2. The USB connection on the board is a dongle on the lower right hand side of the board.

3. When the connection is complete there will be a steady green light coming from the indicator LED.

Make sure that your projector is set in front of the Smart Board and the image is centered and fills most of or all of the screen. Once you get the green light you will need to orient the board. There are four ways to do this.

Orientation

1. When you turn on your computer the Smart Welcome Center opens. From the Quick Start menu you can choose Orient. You can also set this window to not open whenever you start your computer.

2. Right clicking on the Smart Icon located in the lower right hand of Windows and chose Orient.

3. Press and hold the Keyboard and Right Mouse Click button that are located on the front of the Smart Board pen tray. When you release the buttons the Orient screen will open.

To orient the board you need to press the yellow circle that appears in the middle of the red cross. You must use something with a point in order to accurately set up the board. One of the Smart Board pens or your finger tip should do the trick.

The orientation is set once you release the point not when you first press it. So you can drag your pen in from anywhere on the board and lift it when you reach the yellow circle. After each time you set the orientation another red cross will appear. You are finished when the screen goes back to your computer desktop.

Your Smart Board is ready for use.
